Bayston Hill Pump Track — A Free Family Ride Near Shrewsbury

Days Out · Shropshire
This one's right on our doorstep. Three miles south of Shrewsbury, tucked behind the skate park and sports fields in Bayston Hill, is one of the best free family rides in the county — a proper two-loop pump track with big swoopy rollers, banked berms and a play area right next to it for whoever's too small to ride yet.
It's our local, so we're at Bayston Hill a lot. Here's the honest lowdown — what it's like to ride, who it suits, and the bikes that make a session here fly.

The quick facts
What it's actually like to ride
The clever thing about Bayston Hill is the two loops. The outer loop is big and flowing — long rollers and sweeping berms that reward pumping for speed, brilliant once a child has the rhythm. The inner loop is tighter and more technical, so more confident riders can link the two and keep going for ages without stopping.
That mix makes it genuinely good for a range of ages and abilities in one visit. Little ones can roll the outer loop slowly or scoot the flat bits on a balance bike; older kids can pump the rollers and carry the berms; and there's enough in the technical loop to keep even quick riders busy. The surface has more texture than smooth tarmac, so it's best on a dry day.
My two are 6 and 9 and only gaining confidence on such tracks so took the slower route whilst they find their balance, but they loved it. In the video background you will see slightly older and more confident kids fly through the air on their mountain bikes.
Kev also took his kids to Bayston Hill for the morning early in 2026 and grabbed some great videos of them flying over track. Make sure you check it out on the Shyre Bikes Tik Tok where we have loads of great local content and biking tips.
Which bike, and who it suits
Because Bayston Hill suits a real spread of ages, there's no single "right" bike. For the littlest riders, a balance bike is perfect for scooting the flatter sections and the play area. For older kids who want to pump and jump the loops, a light mountain bike is the one.
Parent notes before you go
- Helmets on. A well-fitted helmet is a must once they're pumping for speed; pads are a smart shout for beginners.
- Go on a dry day. The textured surface is grippy and fun when dry, but slower and messier after rain.
- Bring the little ones. The play area and green space right next door make it easy with mixed ages.
- Share the loops. It gets busy on sunny weekends — take turns and watch the flow before dropping in.
Make a day of it
You're minutes from Shrewsbury here, so it's easy to build a bigger day around it. Ride the loops in the morning, then head into town for the riverside and the Quarry park, or south towards the Shropshire Hills for a proper Shropshire afternoon. A pump-track session and a riverside chip stop is a hard combination to beat.
The bit we love most
It's ours. Free, five minutes from home, and busy with local kids getting better every weekend — with a play area for the toddlers and berms for the big ones. That's exactly the kind of riding Shyre is here for. More rolling, less scrolling.
