The first bike with pedals.

For children moving on from a balance bike, and for those starting from scratch. One gear, brakes they can reach, and a frame light enough to manage on their own, so there is as little as possible between them and riding.

Will it fit?

Height 100–120cm
Inside leg from 44cm
Ages 4–6
Weight 6.9kg ready to ride (6.7kg without pedals)

At 6.9kg ready to ride, the Hopton 16in is light enough for a child to manage entirely on their own. They can lift it, wheel it about and get going again after a stop. Most 16in bikes on the high street weigh between 9 and 11kg, against a child of around 17kg, and that difference shows in how much they want to ride.

What you get

  • Shyre Junior Fit. 127mm cranks, narrow bars and a junior saddle, so the pedal circle and the reach suit a child’s proportions rather than a scaled-down adult’s.
  • 6061 aluminium alloy frame and forks. Light in the hand and built for years of everyday riding.
  • Single speed. Simple to ride, so they can concentrate on steering, braking and where they are going.
  • Alloy V-brakes, front and rear, with short-reach levers. Sized for small hands, so they can stop confidently.
  • Quick-release seatpost clamp. Raise the saddle as they grow, no tools needed.
  • Multi-terrain tyres. Happy on pavements, parks, towpaths and light trails.

If they cannot balance yet

Stabilisers come with every 16in Hopton. We supply them because some children get going more quickly with a bit of support, and that is a decision for you rather than us.

If you have the time, we would suggest another approach first: take the pedals off, lower the saddle until both feet are flat on the ground, and let them scoot. Balance is the part that takes longest to learn, and it comes more easily without pedals in the way. Once they have it, the pedals go back on and most children are riding within an afternoon.

How to measure their inside leg

Stand them against a wall with their shoes on. Hold a hardback book between their legs, spine upwards, and raise it until it sits comfortably. Measure from the top of the spine to the floor.

This is more reliable than age. Children of the same age can differ by 15 to 20cm in height, and as much again in leg length.

Buying from us

Lifetime frame and fork warranty, and it transfers with the bike

If a frame or fork fails we replace the bike, not just the part. Pass it on to a younger sibling or sell it when they outgrow it, and the cover goes with it.

90 days to change your mind

Take your time deciding whether it fits and whether they get on with it.

Shyre Trade Up — to 55% back

Send us a photograph when they outgrow it and we will agree a value towards their next bike before you commit to anything.

We will match the price

If you find a comparable bike from another brand for less, send us the link and we will match it. It needs to be the same wheel size, with an alloy frame and equivalent brakes and gearing, new and in stock at a UK retailer.

It arrives 90% built

A basic tool kit is in the box and there are assembly videos to follow. If you would rather someone talked you through it, book a video call and we will go through it with you. If you would rather not do it at all, there is little enough left that most local bike shops will finish it off for a small charge.

Named after Hopton Woods in south Shropshire, a family favourite for our weekend rides. Forestry England call it the home of mountain biking in Shropshire, and its downhill tracks have been a regional race venue for years.
