The first bike with gears.

For children moving up from their first pedal bike, and for those coming straight to a geared one. Seven gears, brakes they can reach, and a frame light enough to manage on their own, so the hill stops being the thing that ends the ride.

Will it fit?

Height 115–135cm
Inside leg from 52cm
Ages 6–8
Weight 8.9kg ready to ride, with pedals and kickstand

Getting to grips with gears takes a couple of rides, no more. The thumb shifter sits under their hand on the right, so they can change up or down without letting go of the bar or looking down to see what they are doing. Once it clicks, they stop getting off at the bottom of hills and start riding up them.

What you get

  • LTWOO 7-speed drivetrain with a thumb shifter. One shifter on the right, worked with the thumb, so changing gear is a click rather than a job. An A2 SL rear mech and enough range to get them up a hill sitting down.
  • 6061 aluminium frame and forks, 8.9kg ready to ride. Alloy rather than the steel used on most bikes at this money, which is where the weight saving comes from. Weighed with the pedals and kickstand fitted, so it is the figure that actually arrives.
  • Shyre Junior Fit. Shorter cranks than an adult bike, a narrower bar and a junior saddle. The shorter pedal circle suits a child’s leg length, and the narrower bar puts their hands at shoulder width rather than beyond it, which is what makes a bike feel controllable.
  • Tektro V-brakes with short-reach levers. The lever blade sits closer to the bar, so a smaller hand can get right round it and pull hard enough to stop properly rather than scrabbling at the tip.
  • Double-wall alloy rims and a sealed-bearing bottom bracket. Double-wall rims stay true through kerb drops far better than single-wall, and sealed bearings keep grit and winter road salt out of the moving parts.
  • 250mm micro-adjust seatpost with a quick-release clamp. Raise the saddle a few millimetres at a time as they grow, without going to find a tool.
  • Multi-terrain tyres and a kickstand. Happy on roads, parks and gravel paths. And letting them pick the colour is worth doing; it makes a difference to how much they ride it.

If they have never used gears

There is no need to rush it. Leave the bike in a middle gear for the first few rides and let them get used to everything else first.

When they are ready, one click at a time is plenty. Change before the hill rather than partway up it, and keep pedalling gently while the chain moves across. Most children have it within a couple of rides, and after that they will be using the gears without thinking about it.

How to measure their inside leg

Stand them against a wall with their shoes on. Hold a hardback book between their legs, spine upwards, and raise it until it sits comfortably. Measure from the top of the spine to the floor.

This is more reliable than age. Children of the same age can differ by 15 to 20cm in height, and as much again in leg length.

Buying from us

Lifetime frame and fork warranty, and it transfers with the bike

If a frame or fork fails we replace the bike, not just the part. Everything else is covered for two years. Pass it on to a younger sibling or sell it when they outgrow it, and the cover goes with it.

90 days to change your mind

Take your time deciding whether it fits and whether they get on with it.

Shyre Trade Up — to 55% back

Send us a photograph when they outgrow it and we will agree a value towards their next bike before you commit to anything.

We will match the price

If you find a comparable bike from another brand for less, send us the link and we will match it. It needs to be the same wheel size, with an alloy frame and equivalent brakes and gearing, new and in stock at a UK retailer.

It arrives 90% built

A basic tool kit is in the box and there are assembly videos to follow. If you would rather someone talked you through it, book a video call and we will go through it with you. If you would rather not do it at all, there is little enough left that most local bike shops will finish it off for a small charge.

Named after Hopton Woods in south Shropshire, a family favourite for our weekend rides. Forestry England call it the home of mountain biking in Shropshire, and its downhill tracks have been a regional race venue for years.
