01The buildSeven decisions that make a Shyre ride like a Shyre.
Built for the rider, not shrunk from a grown-up bike.
Most bikes at this size are adult frames made smaller. The Hopton 20 was drawn around a child from the first sketch. This is what that changes.
Light enough to be theirs
They can lift it, turn it and carry it. Nobody waits for a parent.
Alloy rather than the steel used on most bikes at this money, and weighed with pedals and kickstand fitted. It shows on the last climb home.
Drawn around a child
Shorter cranks, a narrower bar and a junior saddle.
The shorter pedal circle suits a 6 to 8 year old's legs and the narrower bar puts their hands at shoulder width, which makes the bike easier to control.
Levers set for small hands
Fingers right round the blade, full pull every time.
Tektro V-brakes with the lever sitting close to the bar. A smaller hand gets a proper grip and enough leverage to stop on a wet hill, not just slow down.
Gears that make sense to a child
One click per change. No front mech to think about.
LTWOO A2 SL rear mech and a thumb shifter under their right hand. They change gear without letting go of the bar, and before long they ride the hills they used to walk.
Rims and bearings that last
Double-wall rims, sealed bearing bottom bracket.
Kerb drops, towpaths and road salt are what kill cheap kids bikes. Double-wall rims stay true and sealed bearings keep the grit out, so it still rolls cleanly next spring.
Raise the saddle, no tools
250mm micro-adjust post with a quick-release clamp.
A few millimetres every couple of months, because they grow faster than they tell you. The post has a scale line so you can see where you were.
Tyres for all of it
Multi-terrain 20in tyres. Kickstand fitted.
Enough grip for gravel and grass without dragging on tarmac. The kickstand means it stands up at the end of a ride rather than lying in the mud.
Every part had to earn its place.

What parents ask about the Shyre Hopton 20" Wheel Hybrid Kids Bike

Is the Hopton 20 the right size for my child?
Riders roughly 6 to 8 years old, 115 to 135cm tall, with an inside leg of 52cm or more. Age starts the search, inside leg confirms the fit. If they are between sizes and still growing, the Hopton 20 is usually the right call over the 16.
How much do I have to build?
It arrives 90% built. You fit the pedals, straighten and tighten the bars, and check the brakes. A basic tool kit is in the box and there are assembly videos to follow. If you would rather someone talked you through it, book a video call and we will go through it with you.
Where should the saddle be?
For a new rider, set it so the balls of both feet reach the ground while seated. As confidence grows, raise it so the leg keeps a slight bend at the bottom of the pedal stroke. The post has a quick-release clamp and a scale line, so it takes seconds. Never raise it past the minimum insertion mark.
Can I bring the brake levers closer in?
The levers have a reach adjuster. Wind it in so the blade sits closer to the bar until they can get their fingers comfortably round it. To change the angle, loosen the clamp bolt slightly, rotate the lever, retighten it and check both brakes engage fully before riding.
The brake is rubbing. What do I check?
Check the wheel is sitting straight in the dropouts and the bolts are tight. Then look at the pads from above, they should sit evenly either side of the rim. The small spring tension screws on each V-brake arm centre the pads. A quarter turn is usually enough.
How often does it need looking at?
Before each ride, a quick check of tyre pressure, brakes and that nothing is loose. Keep the chain clean and lightly oiled, more often in winter. For a regular rider, a yearly safety check by a bike shop is worth it.
What pressure should the tyres be?
The range is printed on the tyre sidewall. Towards the lower end for grip on grass and gravel, towards the upper end for tarmac. Check them every couple of weeks, small wheels lose pressure faster than you would expect.
Is there a maximum rider weight?
The Hopton 20 is designed for riders up to the top of its height range. If your child is at the upper end of the sizing, or carrying a heavy bag, the Hopton 24 may suit them better. Contact us if you are unsure and we will advise.
What do we do when they outgrow it?
Send us a photograph and we agree a value, up to 55% back, towards their next bike with Shyre Trade Up. The lifetime frame and fork warranty also transfers with the bike, so it holds its value if you pass it on or sell it.
What does the warranty actually cover?
Lifetime on the frame and fork. If either fails we replace the bike, not just the part. Everything else is covered for two years. The cover transfers to the next owner.
What if it is not right for them?
Yes. You have 90 days to change your mind under our happiness guarantee. Take your time deciding whether it fits and whether they get on with it.
Will you match a cheaper price?
Yes. If you find a comparable bike from another brand for less, send us the link and we will match it. It needs to be the same wheel size, with an alloy frame and equivalent brakes and gearing, new and in stock at a UK retailer.
