Frog's Been Sold, Isla Went Boutique — So We Built Ours

If you've shopped for a decent kids' bike lately, you'll know two things: the good ones are gloriously light, and they're often eye-wateringly expensive. For years, a handful of British names owned that "premium but proper" corner of the market. Lately, that corner has changed shape.

What's changed at the top of the market

In early 2026, Frog Bikes — the much-loved British children's brand founded by Jerry and Shelley Lawson — entered administration and was bought by Mike Ashley's Frasers Group, the retail giant behind Sports Direct, Evans Cycles and Wiggle. The bikes live on, but the independent, family-owned chapter has closed — and reporting at the time noted the brand had struggled to keep manufacturing going in the UK.

Islabikes, the other British trailblazer, stepped back from mass production in 2023. It's still very much around — spare parts, guarantees, and occasional small-batch runs, including a lovely 20th-anniversary model in 2026 — but it's now a boutique operation rather than a bike you can order in any size, any day.

None of this is a knock on either brand. They shaped what a good kids' bike should be, and we've huge respect for them. But it does leave a real question for parents: who's making a genuinely independent, British, lightweight kids' bike that a normal family can actually afford?

Why "lightweight" matters more than badge

A child riding a bike that's a third of their bodyweight is fighting physics on every pedal stroke. Lightweight isn't a luxury spec — it's the difference between a wobble and a grin.
