What Size Bike for a 5 Year Old? UK Sizing Guide (2026)

The short answer

Most 5-year-olds need a bike with 16-inch wheels. Taller or more confident five-year-olds (roughly 110cm+) often fit an 18" or 20" wheel. Age is only a rough guide, though — the reliable way to size a kids' bike is by your child's inside-leg measurement, not their age. Here's how to get it right first time.

"What size bike does my 5-year-old need?" is the question every parent asks — usually stood in a shop, or with 30 browser tabs open, trying not to buy the wrong thing. Five is a genuinely tricky age because it sits right on the line between two wheel sizes. Get it right and they'll be pedalling off down the path in minutes. Get it wrong and the bike feels like hard work, so they don't want to ride. This guide gives you a clear answer, the measurement that actually matters, and the exact bikes that fit.

Kids' bike size chart by age

Use this as a starting point, then confirm with an inside-leg measurement (below). Where a child straddles two sizes, height and confidence decide it.

Age Wheel size Rough height Inside leg
1.5–3 yrs 12" balance 85–100cm 30–42cm
3–5 yrs 14" 95–110cm 40–50cm
4–6 yrs 16" 105–120cm 45–56cm
5–8 yrs 20" 115–130cm 53–63cm
7–11 yrs 24" 125–145cm 60–72cm
10–13 yrs 26" 140cm+ 70cm+

A five-year-old lands in the 16" band, with taller fives moving up to 20".

The measurement that actually matters: inside leg

Age charts are a guide — but two five-year-olds can be 10cm apart in height. The single most reliable number is your child's inside-leg (inseam), because it tells you whether they can get a foot flat on the floor when sat on the saddle. That flat-foot confidence is what makes a nervous new rider brave.

  1. Stand your child against a wall, bare feet, heels back, wearing normal clothes.
  2. Pop a book between their legs, spine up, snug to the crotch (like a saddle).
  3. Mark the top of the book on the wall and measure from there straight down to the floor in cm. That's the inside leg.

Then match it to the bike's minimum saddle height. For a brand-new or nervous rider, you want their inside leg to be equal to or slightly above the lowest saddle height, so both feet reach the ground. For a confident pedaller, a couple of centimetres of tip-toe is fine and gives them room to grow.

16" or 20" for a 5-year-old?

This is the real question at five, and the honest answer is: it depends on the child, not the birthday.

  • Go 16" if your child is average height or below, is new to pedals, or is a cautious rider. They'll get both feet down easily and feel in control — which means they'll actually want to ride.
  • Go 20" if your child is tall (around 115cm+), already rides confidently, or you want a bike they won't outgrow in a year. A 20" gives more room to grow and often adds gears for hills and distance.

If you're genuinely on the fence, size down for a first pedal bike and up for a confident rider swapping from a smaller bike. Confidence beats a couple of extra centimetres every time.

Don't forget weight — it matters more than the size

Here's the bit most guides skip. A five-year-old weighs around 18–20kg. Many supermarket and toy-shop bikes weigh 11–13kg — that's over half the child's body weight, made of gas-pipe steel. It's why so many kids "just don't take to it": the bike is too heavy to lift, steer or pedal uphill. A quality lightweight kids' bike is often 40% lighter, and that single difference does more for confidence than any other spec. When you compare bikes for your five-year-old, check the weight first.

Signs the bike is the wrong size

Too big — they can't get feet flat down when nervous; they tip-toe and topple; the reach to the bars feels a stretch; they seem scared of it.

Too small — knees hitting the bars; saddle already at its highest with legs still cramped; steering feels twitchy; they've had it under two years and shot up. If in doubt, sit them on it: a slight bend in the knee at the bottom of the pedal stroke is spot on.

FAQs: sizing a bike for a 5-year-old

What size bike does a 5-year-old need?

Most five-year-olds need a 16-inch wheel bike. Taller or very confident fives (around 110cm and up) may be better on an 18" or 20". Confirm with an inside-leg measurement rather than relying on age alone.

Is a 16 or 18 inch bike better for a 5-year-old?

For an average or cautious five-year-old, 16" is usually the safer, more confidence-building choice. An 18" or 20" suits taller children or those already riding well who need room to grow.

What height child fits a 16 inch bike?

A 16" wheel bike typically fits children around 105–120cm tall, with an inside leg of roughly 45–56cm — most four to six-year-olds.

When should my child move to a 20 inch bike?

Usually between five and eight, once their inside leg reaches about 53cm and they've outgrown a 16". Signs it's time: knees near the bars and the saddle already at its highest.

How much should a 5-year-old's bike weigh?

As light as you can manage — ideally under 8kg. Many cheap kids' bikes weigh 11–13kg, more than half the child's body weight, which makes riding genuinely hard. A lightweight aluminium bike transforms how quickly they learn.
