The full story

A proper kids' bike — not a shrunk-down adult one

Most 'kids' bikes' are adult bikes with the corners cut. The Hopton was drawn around a child's body from the first sketch — and you can feel it the moment they set off.

Light where it counts

A bike a child can handle is a bike they'll love. Every Hopton is built on a featherlight 6061 alloy frame, so even the smallest riders can lift it, lean it and pick it back up when the inevitable happens. Less weight means easier starts, safer stops and far more miles before anyone asks to go home.

Kid-specific geometry keeps them upright and confident: a low standover for easy on-and-off, a short reach so they're never stretched, and steering tuned to be stable rather than twitchy.

School run, park loop, big weekend — one bike does it all.
School run, park loop, big weekend — one bike does it all.

Real gears, real control

From the 20" up, every Hopton runs a 7-speed drivetrain with a twist that small hands can actually shift. Hills stop being the enemy, distances stretch, and riding together as a family becomes genuinely fun — for everyone.

Short-reach brake levers are sized for children's fingers, so stopping power is always within reach, in any weather. It's the detail parents notice second and kids benefit from first.

The bike they ride every day should be the best bike they own.

The Shyre family, Shropshire

Four sizes, one journey

The Hopton comes in 16", 20", 24" and 26" wheels, so there's a right-sized bike from age four to the teens. And because kids grow faster than bikes wear out, our Trade-Up programme and lifetime frame warranty mean moving up a size never means starting over.

Each size comes in its own line-up of pop colours — from classic Blue and Green to Pink, Purple, Grey, Red and White depending on the size.

7-speed, kid-shiftable

From the 20" up, a 7-speed drivetrain turns hills into games. The shifter is tuned so small hands can change gear without letting go.

Short-reach levers

Brake levers sized for children's fingers mean confident, controlled stops every time — not a grown-up lever they can barely reach.

Kid-specific geometry

Low standover, short reach, stable steering. Drawn around a child's proportions, not scaled down from an adult frame.

Hopton sizing, answered

Should I buy a size up for them to grow into?
No — an oversized bike is harder to control and knocks confidence. Buy the size that fits today; every Hopton has adjustable fit built in, and our Trade-Up programme makes moving up a size easy when the time comes.
Is inside-leg really better than age for sizing?
Yes. Two five-year-olds can differ by 15cm in height. Inside-leg tells us exactly whether they can stand over the frame and reach the ground — the two things that make a bike feel safe.
When are kids ready for gears?
Usually from around age 5, once pedalling and braking are automatic. That's why the Hopton 20" and up run a 7-speed drivetrain, while the 16" stays simple so new riders can focus on the basics.
Coming from a balance bike — do they need stabilisers?
Almost certainly not. Riders coming off a Myndie already know how to balance, so they typically pedal off on a Hopton 16" within minutes. We don't fit stabilisers as standard for exactly this reason.
