What Size Bike for a 6 Year Old? 16" or 20" UK Guide

The short answer

Most six-year-olds fit a 16" or 20" wheel bike. If they're still comfortable on a 16", great; but many sixes are ready for a 20" — often their first bike with gears. Height and whether they've outgrown their current bike decide it.

By six, most children are properly riding — pedalling, braking, tackling the school run and the odd hill. That means two things: they're probably outgrowing their first pedal bike, and they're ready for a bit more capability. Six is the age gears usually enter the picture, and the age the hybrid-versus-mountain-bike question first comes up. Here's how to size it and choose.

16" or 20" for a 6-year-old?

Six straddles the two sizes, so look at your child rather than the calendar:

  • Stay on 16" if they're on the smaller side or still have room on their current bike (saddle not yet near its highest, knees not near the bars).
  • Move to 20" if they're average-to-tall (115cm+), riding confidently, or have clearly outgrown their 16". A 20" adds gears for hills and distance, and lasts a good couple of years.

The tell-tale sign it's time to size up: their inside leg is around 53cm+, and the 16" saddle is already near the top with knees rising toward the handlebars.

Do they need gears at 6?

Not essential, but genuinely useful once they're covering more ground. A 20" with a simple gear set lets a six-year-old tackle hills without giving up, and keeps up on longer family rides. Look for an easy-to-use shifter and a sensible gear range — they don't need 21 speeds, just enough to make hills possible and flats fun. If your child mostly pootles around the park, a simpler setup is fine; if you're riding to school or on trails, gears earn their place.

Hybrid or mountain bike?

At 20" the range splits. A hybrid (like the Hopton) is lighter and faster on pavements, cycle paths and the school run — the best all-rounder for most families. A mountain bike (like the Eastie) adds a suspension fork, chunkier tyres and disc brakes for kids who'll ride trails, pump tracks and rougher ground. Pick for where you'll actually ride most. The right Shyre for a 6-year-old

For most sixes moving up, the Hopton 20" is the do-everything choice. If they're trail-mad, the Eastie 20" brings suspension and disc brakes.

FAQs: sizing a bike for a 6-year-old

What size bike does a 6-year-old need?

Most six-year-olds fit a 16" or 20" wheel bike. Taller or confident sixes are usually ready for a 20", often their first geared bike.

Is a 20 inch bike right for a 6-year-old?

Yes, for an average-to-tall six-year-old (around 115cm+) who's riding confidently. Check they can get the balls of their feet down when seated, then enjoy the extra growing room and gears.

When should a child move from 16 to 20 inch?

When their inside leg reaches roughly 53cm and the 16" saddle is near its highest with knees rising toward the bars — typically between five and seven.

Does a 6-year-old need gears?

Not essential, but helpful once they're riding hills or longer distances. A simple gear set makes the school run and family rides far more enjoyable.
